Thousands of black Charlestonians, most former slaves, remained in the city and conducted a series of commemorations to declare their sense of the meaning of the war. The largest of these events, and unknown until some extraordinary luck in my recent research, took place on May 1, 1865. During the final year of the war, the Confederates had converted the planters’ horse track, the Washington Race Course and Jockey Club, into an outdoor prison. Union soldiers were kept in horrible conditions in the interior of the track; at least 257 died of exposure and disease and were hastily buried in a mass grave behind the grandstand. Some twenty-eight black workmen went to the site, re-buried the Union dead properly, and built a high fence around the cemetery. They whitewashed the fence and built an archway over an entrance on which they inscribed the words, “Martyrs of the Race Course.”

Then, black Charlestonians in cooperation with white missionaries and teachers, staged an unforgettable parade of 10,000 people on the slaveholders’ race course. The symbolic power of the low-country planter aristocracy’s horse track (where they had displayed their wealth, leisure, and influence) was not lost on the freedpeople. A New York Tribune correspondent witnessed the event, describing “a procession of friends and mourners as South Carolina and the United States never saw before.”

  1. The way to celebrate the troops is to make sure your kids have an educated lineage so they don’t become one, or if they do they do so exclusively by choice and not circumstance. Other than that, just let these people kill each other, who cares. You can’t stop tribal warfare. The most you can do is place yourself on the winning side of how human nature works. That’s why war is so profitable. Corporations don’t insight war nearly as much as they just ride the wave of demand ….. just like every other business.

  2. Thats not true..corporations raid other lands for resources which in turn sparks war.. They also supply weapons for all takers.. which means if they make a billion dollar plane there has to be conflict to justify someone buying it.. and choice or no choice, folks shouldnt be killing and ravaging a place we all have to live..

  3. You’re wrong. Corporations don’t raid lands. Human beings raid lands based on what their self interest dictates and/or based on what they’re told to do by others. This can take shape as part of a corporation, a government, a tribe, a gang , a rogue intelligence guerilla group …or whatever. The raiding of resources by various sects has existed long before corporations existed. Hence my view that these patterns are inherit, and the only thing to concern yourself with is embrace a cultural embedding that values getting on the beneficiary side as much as possible. This doesn’t entail participating directly, just as I stated. General indifference and letting these people kill each other without concern works just fine. There is a ton of chaos in this world and it will never end. Those who place themselves on the beneficiary side of a piece of it be it through a career, a profession, a business, a skill etc will enjoy life much more than those always on the defensive….. and always a victim.

  4. A corporation by definition is an institution whose main goal by law is most cases is to earn money for its share holders.. which justifies the activities taken on its behalf.. Including the raiding of lands etc.. To ensure that activity is carried out, we have deemed corporations to be people via the Supreme Ct..If ur happy soaking up the blood after a kill so be it.. eventually that catches up to and when it does ur reminded of ur position on the matter.. Either ur for the liberation of folks or ur not..sounds to me ur not..

  5. I’m for the “liberation” of folks. That’s why I’m blatantly posting how all this truly. So they don’t get tangled up in idealistic lies focusing on things they have no control over. I know my view is a very underdog and upopular one among pretty much everyone of any political association. But the assumption that some how my outlook is the antithesis of “liberation” simply isn’t true. I want people to be REALLY liberated. Not just tangled in idealistic nonsense by people who have made a career out of it. And for the record that doesn’t mean I don’t support “nice things” like gang prevention or whatever. It just means I militantly encourage people to stay away from where they don’t belong. And anything and anywhere unhealthy is where you DON’T belong. At least the smart ones.
